A RAY OF HOPE AMIDST THE STORMS.

As the world celebrated World Red Cross Day yesterday on 8th May 2020, here in Kericho a county marked by looming landslides and floods meant that the Red Cross Kericho team had a unique day to commemorate.

With two groups in place, one at a training camp for Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) for covid-19 and the other assessment and distribution of household items to landslide victims, it was all hands on deck.

Hiking hills with rocky and wet terrains to assess the area is how the day kicked off, all in all it was worth it,for the safety of the people living around there.

Residents of Chebit village in Sertwet Soin ward of Soin/Sigowet sub-county have a reason to smile after 3 powerful organizations that is the national government, the county government and the Kenya Red Cross Kericho branch visited them at their point of need to deliver during this stormy times.
victims of landslide at sertwet primary

This is after a landslide that occurred in the area that left them homeless and destroyed their farm produce, they have since been taking shelter at sertwet primary in classrooms with no lighting and proper window panes.

However the county government through the area MCA donated 30 mattresses, 60 blankets, sanitizers, masks and sanitaries, while the national government on the other hand, delivered 10 bags of rice and a box of cooking oil.
The families in Chebit village have been sleeping in the cold  untill today, where smiles were written all over their faces as soon as help came their way ,they were so grateful as we could hear some chants songs of praises. Children were also not left behind as they were munching candy.
After the assessment by the Red Cross team and then online registration of all affected households, they were urged to be cautious about the land movement and to plant more trees by the county coordinator.

We can all agree it was a better day than yesterday as there is always light at the end of the tunnel. It is therefore our soul responsibility to be there for others not only after the calamity.

Seeing smiles on their faces just brightened my heart, l would not have wished to celebrate World Red Cross Day in any other way for service to humanity is service to self. HINIVUU.
