Digital foot print

Almost every youth  is on the social media arena this days be it on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn ,You tube, Snapchat among other available platforms, for whatever reason  best known to self.

We spend most of our time on our phones, responding to mails, liking pages or watching clips, we have made our phones our best friend therefore reducing any form of human interactions, we mostly do not pay attention to the person next to us in the room, our food gets cold or missing a stop in a matatu because we are so glued on our phones.

We have turned our social media into a whole world of fantasies and charade it  is like we are living in two different worlds the real you verses the online you, we are constantly seeking approval from our mostly unknown followers to boost our minute self esteem, we are always trying to show off  our material staff, our job, the place we have traveled to, the person we are dating  and so fort. Lets be clear I am not against this kind of activities, all I am passing across is just be you and do you stick to your lane other wise you do not want to face the wrath of Kenyans on Twitter (KOT) Heh! if you are in this platform you definitely  know what i am talking about.

I am however alarmed by some kind of posting that we all some time see around, for instance tribal messages aimed at disrupting peace, hate speech, non constructive conversation  on people and organization circulating on these platforms.

We are there commenting sharing and even form a group to laugh and talk about the issue, when we are not doing anything positive to contribute. This tendency  may be seen as trendy and a way of attracting followers but once you starting looking for a job and you are asked to leave your social media details, then you will know the importance of having a good digital foot print.
when I was on attachment my supervisor told me that LinkedIn is a professional site and therefore it should be treated as such, from  the profile  pic, it should depict a serious persona.

A while back there was a trendy story of a young lady who got an internship with NASA but because of what she wrote on Twitter caught the attention of one the judges in the interview panel and that is how she lost the opportunity.

As much as we love to share and contribute to discussion. First we should be careful what we put out there because big brother is watching and second if we only understood that images we share are permanently stored  and it's impossible to erase them. Remember to be a responsible online user.

  2. Nice article....its true that social medial can destroy our mental health, that is, we try comparing our real lives with the virtual life being posted online and criticize ourselves. Also, trying to constantly seek for social validation and depriving true self-confidence that comes from within. Lastly, makes people think less(consulting goggle for everything) and out sourcing our ability to think. I was a victim of social media depression and self criticizim . Though social media is not bad, its actually useful when used correctly. It can be used for personal branding and networking, Pure engagement which is real and good interactions with people.

  3. Nice piece Winnie though the only problem we have is the world we're living in, it has been branded itself as 'FAKE' Coz all we have in social media when it comes to real life is 'FAKE'
