Volunteering

Volunteerism
The act of offering one’s services, skills or time volunteering to renowned organizations like the UN, Red Cross, VSO, and the scouts among others has given volunteers an edge in this dynamic world.
Skills gained during volunteering enable youths in school or those who have graduated to tackle both managerial and life issues, volunteering is just a serious business like any other as it can be a bridge to professional success if taken seriously even the UN values volunteers that on 5th December it is the International Volunteers Day.
What most youths don’t know is you can’t just complete your studies and expect to land a lucrative job or get connection to job positions without the necessary skills or a bit of hustling to get there, many of us hold the notion that you have to start somewhere and you have to get out of our comfort zone to realize your dreams, well volunteerism is one way to go by.

We all have participated in a  volunteer activity at one point in our lives be it in school, church, hospitals and rehabilitation centres ,such activities included providing social services, virtual volunteering, teaching English to none English speakers, environment conservation and tree planting exercise. These activities have enhanced skills development, improve quality of human life through service delivery to the old and sick, through volunteerism many volunteers have established contacts and networks for possible employment, built lasting relationships, learnt to appreciate people’s culture, their personality and of course value their opinions  as well as understood the importance of team work.

During one of the mentorship programs  by YALI cohort 11 at  konnect youth consortium (KYC)  one of the speakers Kevins Randiek said, 'while volunteering do it with a mission have a back up plan', l mean you can't stay there for ever at one point you will need to transition and as you volunteer value it, take it with seriousness.

Kevins talk about how he was fired from a big media house (No names here please) because he made a mistake, what he was trying to say was, as you volunteer or intern or even work somewhere, try to learn as much you can, for no one is willing to teach you, either ask around,or simply make use of the internet.

For me volunteering offers intangible rewards and personal satisfaction just being able to make a person smile, or dedicating one’s time to helping others without monetary value is a true service to God.

  1. Hardly will you get a company which is willing to employ you immediately after graduating or while in college. Most of them will only do so after you've volunteered. By doing so, they'll know your weakness and strength. So, I think volunteering is not an option. It is a real thing.

  2. Its positive that volunteering brings personal satisfaction... Also it makes you grow up. What I mean is, when you interact with many people you get to know how they made it to the top and if you have a goal of the same it will boost your thinking and you'll get better at getting to your goal. As growing youth that's one of the experiences I've had in volunteering.

What I mean is, interacting with many people helps you learn how they made to their goals and how they handle different situations. That helps you use their ways to attain your own goals faster. That's one of the experiences I've had in volunteering.
